The Classroom We All Forgot...

India has no shortage of hearts that care. Celebrities raise their voices. Corporates write cheques. NGOs build toilets, donate books, install digital labs. The photos look good. The numbers sound inspiring. But step inside a government school today, and you’ll feel the silence.

A classroom with no teacher.

A child with no notebook.

A library locked.

A lab forgotten.

A talented student too shy to speak

This isn’t about “poor schools.” It’s about a system that gave up on belief. Why are our schools still broken, even with so much help?

Because efforts are scattered.

Because teachers are exhausted.

Because no one sticks around long enough.

Because we confused charity with change.

Uniforms were distributed. But learning was not. Buildings were built. But dignity was not. Photos were taken. But trust was never returned to the classroom. We’ve donated computers to kids who’ve never touched a mouse. We’ve built labs where science is never taught. We’ve painted walls in schools where dreams are still in black and white. And somewhere along the way, we stopped asking: ""Where is the child in all this?""

We’ve made government schools invisible. To society. To policy. Even to hope.

Because no one’s child studies there.

Because we assume they’re “used to it.”

Because we think they should be grateful for whatever little they get.

Because the pain of these children doesn’t interrupt our lives anymore.

But here’s what we forget: Every broken bench hides a broken promise. Every ignored child is a future we’re letting fade. Real change will never come from cheque-writing and weekend volunteering alone.

It will come from showing up, again and again- not just with resources, but with respect.

It will come when we stop calling it charity, and start calling it responsibility.

It will come when we stop saying “someone should fix this”, and start saying “why not us?”

Because the problem was never the children. It was us- the adults who stopped believing. It’s time to rebuild that belief. Not just in schools- but in what’s still possible.
